Unpalatable Truths by Jonny Briggs - An exhibition of new works produced in Jersey by Jonny Briggs, Archisle International Photographer in Residence 2017.
Born in Berkshire, England Jonny Briggs obtained his MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art. Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4 New Sensations Winner and Foam Talent, Briggs, who was Artist in Residence at Tate Modern in 2016 and is currently in Selfie to Selfie Expression at Saatchi Gallery uses ‘photography to explore my relationship with deception, the constructed reality of the family, and question the boundaries between my parents and I, between child/adult, self/other, nature/culture, real/fake in an attempt to revive my unconditioned self, beyond the family bubble. Involving staged installations, the cartoonesque and the performative although easily assumed to be photoshopped or faked, upon closer inspection the images are often realised to be more real than first expected.’
For his Jersey project Briggs has directed his artistic enquiry towards the island’s ancient landscape, monuments, institutions and archives through the motif of the mouth. In The Un-carved Block (Ear grafted onto Neolithic menhir) Briggs evokes the cultural memory, myths and beliefs that are projected onto the insular landscape. The exhibition Unpalatable Truths deals with issues of authority, censorship, horror, disgust, concealment and the vexed question over the status of photography itself: truth or fiction?
