Creating The Fabric of India Exhibition - Rosemary Crill retired in 2016 as Senior Curator for South Asia at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, where she is now an Honorary Senior Research Fellow. Over 30 years, she has travelled throughout India and has published widely on Indian textiles and paintings. Her books include Indian Embroidery, Marwar Painting, Indian Ikat Textiles, Chintz: Indian Textiles for the West and most recently The Fabric of India, which accompanied the major exhibition of the same name at the V&A in 2015-16. The V&A's exhibition The Fabric of India was the first to focus solely on India's rich textile traditions. It included many of the most beautiful and historic fabrics ever made, including Tipu Sultan's flowered tent and a unique embroidered coat made for the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. The exhibition explored the raw materials of textiles as well as the techniques and designs that went into creating the astonishing variety of India's textile traditions. The global textile trade was also explored, from 2,000-year-old fragments to the dyed cotton chintzes that changed the way we dress and furnish our houses today. Coming up to the present day, fashion by contemporary Indian designers using traditional techniques show that India's textile traditions are alive and well. This talk, by the exhibition's lead curator, gives an insight into the challenges of mounting a major exhibition, and provides a 'walk-through' of the exhibition itself.
