Cultural Highlights for 2020
CCA Galleries International is known for bringing Internationally esteemed artists to Jersey and making their work more accessible through the sale of limited edition prints, paintings and sculpture and hosting artist performances, discussions and workshops.
We start the year with the beautiful Nicole Farhi: Life and Limb exhibition. If you haven't seen it already, it's your last chance to see these sensitive human studies of models that include Sue Tilley, Eduardo Paolozzi and the English National Ballet. The exhibition runs until 31 January.
Many of our favourite artists will be holding solo exhibitions at the gallery this year. Dan Baldwin first released prints with us in 2006, illustrating albums for musicians such as Paolo Nutini and the White Stripes. He has just finished an exciting new suite Utopia, Delirium and Infatuation. These are the first handmade silkscreen editions, where he has embraced the medium in its full potential - drawing directly onto the drafting film before exposure onto the screen. Each print in the new suite has been created by Baldwin as a first edition image in 3 colour ways. Baldwin's new suite is made in homage to Andy Warhol's iconic flower paintings. Dan explains 'it's a subtle nod to the master as he was one of the first artists that inspired me at art school in the early 1990's. This new way of making prints is an entire new exploration into print takes things to new places which is hugely inspiring'.
Acknowledged globally for his large scale bold and dynamic paintings, Paul Huxley's abstract work explores implied perspectives, combining stretched and distorted ellipses and shapes with flat blocks of colour and linear patterns to create dynamic illusions. Huxley was appointed Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art in 1986. Many now established artists such as Dino Chapman, Nigel Cool, Tracey Emin and Chris Ofili were his students - Huxley was elected Honorary Fellow and Professor Emeritus in 1998. Following his successful exhibition at the Sir Hugh Casson Room, Royal Academy of Arts, Paul will be bringing this considered, bold work to Jersey for the first time in the spring.
2020 celebrates the fourth year of the Jersey Summer Exhibition. This highlight of the Jersey Cultural Calendar developed through the growing appetite for high quality, curated visual art in Jersey. The exhibition is based on the successful model at the Royal Academy every summer - exhibits are selected by a panel of professional artists and shown in a group selling exhibition. As well as exhibiting at a prestigious, international gallery, being selected for the Jersey Summer Exhibition has helped launch the careers of promising Jersey artist, as well as enforcing that those already established. Last year's winner of the Summer Prize was local ceramicist Lindsay Rutter, who is working on a new body of work to exhibit with us later in the year. For the 2020 finale, I am working on a joint exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints by Wilhelmina Barnes-Graham, Sir Terry Frost and Sandra Blow and have more surprises from the God Father of British Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake. One of the gallery highlights from the end of last year was the arrival in Jersey of the artwork for Blake's new album cover for The Who - 'Who'. Watch this space...
