“For me, pop art is often rooted in nostalgia: the nostalgia of old, popular things. And although I’m also continually trying to establish a new pop art, one which stems directly from our time, I’m always looking back at the sources of the idiom and trying to find the technical forms that will best recapture the authentic feel of folk pop.” Peter Blake
Often referred to as the ‘Godfather of British Pop Art’, Sir Peter Blake has been collaborating with CCA since 2003, producing spectacular original limited-edition prints. His work crosses all generational divides and inspires great respect from younger artists such as Damien Hirst, Gavin Turk and Tracey Emin. Knighted an honorary doctor of the Royal College of Art in 2002, his work is represented in many major collections throughout the world.
Blake's work reflects his fascination with all streams of popular culture and the beauty that can be found in everyday objects and surroundings. Many of his creations feature found printed materials such as photographs, comic strips or advertising texts, combined with bold geometric patterns and the use of primary colours. Essentially capturing the effervescent and optimistic ethos of the 1960s and often including a strain of sentimentality and nostalgia with a focus towards childhood innocence and reminiscence, Blake’s works are equally fresh and contemporary, allowing them to make as much of a striking impression today as when he first started making work over 65 years ago. Alongside creating some of the most recognisable prints and paintings of our time, Blake is renowned for his close connection with the music industry, having produced influential and hugely iconic album covers for the Beatles, Paul Weller, The Who, and Oasis.
